On this World Homeless Day, we want to shine a light on a need that pulls especially strong at our heartstrings, and offer some encouragement that no act of kindness is too small.

Did you know?

  • The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority cites 66,436 people in Los Angeles County experiencing homelessness as of early 2020. This represents a 12.7% rise from 2019, point-in-time count.
  • The city of Los Angeles saw a 16.1% rise to 41,290.
  • These numbers capture a picture of homelessness in Los Angeles as it was in January 2020 and before the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. We know numbers continue to soar as a result of the multitude of issues compounded by COVID-19, although the count for 2021 was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Simple ways you can help:

At DOLAN and our non-profit, The Laundry Truck LA, we always keep our eyes on where there is an unmet need and find that through simple acts, we can help restore dignity and self esteem for those in need around us. One of those simple acts is having supplies on hand to give to someone in need. Here are some helpful items:

WATER:

Often we forget that drinking water is not readily available if you are somebody experiencing homelessness. As our temperatures become warmer and more extreme, just something as simple as bottle of water during extreme weather is a welcome necessity.

HYGIENE KITS:

Keeping clean can help maintain a sense of normalcy and prevent the spread of disease, especially if water, showers or bathrooms are not available. Hygiene kits contain the everyday essentials we often take for granted: soap, toiletries, and other items that will help you stay clean. You can pass them out to anyone you see on your normal route to work or errand run. Here are links with suggested items to help you create your own kits:

The gift of warmth is also so needed!:

Our Commitment

For each DOLAN purchase you make, one pound of laundry is cleaned by our mobile laundry non-profit, The Laundry Truck LA. DOLAN stands behind our unhoused community and will continue to support and grow our services in the spirit of lifting up this community in need.

We often have people reaching out from all over the world asking how we did it. We are honored to be a resource and inspiration in someone else's journey to do good, so we created this video to share all of the details! We hope this video either helps you on your journey or helps to inspire you to help meet the unique needs of your community.
